A town often becomes a ghost town because the economic activity that supported it has failed, or due to natural or human-caused disasters such as a flood, government action, uncontrolled lawlessness, or war. Bannack State Park is a registered historic landmark and the site of Montana's first major gold discovery on July 28, 1862. This strike set off a massive gold rush that swelled Bannack's population to over 3,000 by 1863. As the easy to work gold deposit were exhausted, Bannack's bustling population steadily declined.

In 1864, Bannack was named the first Territorial Capital of Montana. This was short lived as it was moved not long after to Virginia City.
